Abbagail Schmitt, and Burrton, Kansas is where my husband Andrew and I are raising our sweet 18-month-old son, Rhett. We chose Burrton because it’s a small town with a big heart—exactly the kind of place we wanted to call home.
I was born and raised in Wichita, attending USD 259’s traditional magnet schools and graduating at the top of my class from West High School. Even as a teenager, I had a heart for community and a drive to make things better. One of my proudest moments from those years was leading the effort to install West High’s first full-signal crosswalk. I partnered with the Wichita City Council and USD 259, raising $80,000 to make it happen so students could safely cross a major intersection.
During my time at West High, I was honored to be selected as a Schooner Mate for the Wichita Riverfest—something that became a tradition, as I’ve continued volunteering for Riverfest year after year. I also discovered my passion for Family and Consumer Sciences, winning two state culinary championships and competing nationally in Washington, D.C., and Nationally in Boston, MA for BPA ( Business Professionals of America.
After high school, I went on to Pittsburg State University, where I earned my degree in Family and Consumer Science Education. I became licensed to teach in Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas, and my first teaching position was at Nevada High School in Missouri. While there, I helped build the school’s FCCLA program to compete at the state level, a milestone I’ll always be proud of.
When Andrew and I decided to start a family, we faced a big decision—stay in Missouri or move closer to home. In the end, we followed our hearts back to Kansas. Not long after, we received the best news: Rhett was on the way. I took some time away from teaching to focus on being a mom and now work remotely in accounting, which allows me to stay connected to both family and community.
Service has always been at the core of who I am. Alongside Riverfest, I’ve spent many years volunteering with Convoy of Hope, helping provide backpacks, school supplies, haircuts, and shoes to children in need across Sedgwick County. I also grew up helping my dad run Automobilia, the largest free community car show in Kansas, and even started a small home baking project to support local farmers and artisans.
Running for the Burrton School Board is my way of continuing that lifelong commitment to service. I want to make sure every voice is heard and that our students have the safety, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.
Burrton has given my family a place to belong, and I’m ready to give back with everything I have—because I believe that when we work together, our community becomes stronger for everyone.
